Albatross Encounter operates dedicated pelagic seabird tours from Kaikōura Harbour, providing some of the most accessible and intimate close-range albatross viewing in the world. Kaikōura's exceptional concentration of seabird life is a direct consequence of its unique marine geology: the Hikurangi Trench — one of the deepest features in the South Pacific — descends to over 4,000 m depth within just one kilometre of the Kaikōura Peninsula. This extraordinary bathymetric gradient means genuinely deep-water pelagic conditions are reached within 15–20 minutes of departing the harbour, placing world-class seabird habitat immediately offshore of a small coastal town on the South Island's east coast. Tours run for approximately 2.5 hours aboard a dedicated small birdwatching vessel (maximum 12 passengers), using frozen fish chum sourced from local commercial fishers to attract tubenoses close to the boat for extended viewing and photography. Up to 10 albatross species have been recorded on a single trip, making Kaikōura one of the highest-concentration albatross viewing sites on Earth. The headline species is Gibson's (Wandering) Albatross — the world's largest flying bird with a wingspan reaching 3.5 m — which approaches the vessel closely and regularly. Other albatross species encountered include Northern Royal Albatross, Southern Royal Albatross, Campbell Albatross, Salvin's Albatross, White-capped (Shy) Albatross, Buller's Albatross, and Black-browed Albatross. Kaikōura is uniquely positioned for Hutton's Shearwater (Puffinus huttoni; Vulnerable), a species that breeds only in two colonies high in the Kaikōura Ranges above the town — the only seabird in the world known to breed in mountain snow-gully habitat — and forages offshore in the Hikurangi Trench waters visible from the same beach where the mountains begin. Sooty Shearwater, Flesh-footed Shearwater, Short-tailed Shearwater, Northern Giant Petrel, Southern Giant Petrel, and Pintado (Cape) Petrel are also regular on the chum slick, alongside White-faced Storm-Petrel and Wilson's Storm-Petrel. NZ Fur Seal and Hector's Dolphin (the world's smallest and rarest dolphin, endemic to NZ coastal waters) are frequently encountered. The eBird hotspot L521309 ('Kaikoura--offshore--Albatross Encounter pelagic') documents confirmed species from these offshore trips.
