About This Trip

The Penzance Pelagic is a dedicated offshore seabird trip run commercially by Mermaid Pleasure Trips aboard the Mermaid II — a working boat operating out of Penzance Harbour at the far southwest tip of Cornwall, serving as the mainland English complement to the Isles of Scilly pelagic scene. The trip heads west from Penzance Harbour into the waters south and southwest of Land's End, the most exposed and seabird-rich stretch of the English Atlantic coast, with chumming used to attract birds to the vessel during a drift offshore. The route takes the boat past the dramatic cliff faces of Lamorna and Porthgwarra before reaching the productive waters around Wolf Rock — a lighthouse standing on an isolated rock eight miles south of Land's End in 50 metres of water, surrounded by the first genuinely deep Atlantic water accessible from the Cornish mainland — and beyond.

The waters off Land's End and around Wolf Rock mark the southern limit of the British continental shelf, where the shelf plunges steeply to open Atlantic depths. This topographic transition, combined with the influence of the warm North Atlantic Current pushing northeast along the Atlantic edge of southwest England, concentrates migrating and dispersing seabirds in the approaches to the English Channel. During the core summer and early autumn season, the same assemblage of pelagic tubenoses seen on Scilly — Cory's and Great Shearwaters moving north on post-breeding dispersal, Sooty and Balearic Shearwaters in the English Channel approaches, Wilson's Storm-petrel on its northward migration — passes through these waters in abundance.

The target species list reflects the full suite of Atlantic pelagic birds accessible from the Cornish coast: Wilson's Petrel (known outside North America as Wilson's Storm-petrel), the Antarctic-breeding tubenose that is the principal quarry from July to early August, hovering and dancing over the chum slick with its distinctive yellow-webbed feet visible in good light; Great and Cory's Shearwaters in their peak July–September season; Sooty Shearwater on southward autumn passage from August onward; Balearic Shearwater, the Critically Endangered breeding endemic of the Balearic Islands, present in notable numbers in the eastern North Atlantic approaches from July through October; Manx Shearwater in thousands. European Storm-petrel, Great Skua, Pomarine Skua and Arctic Skua are seen on virtually every trip during the peak season; Sabine's Gull and Grey Phalarope are autumn passage species. Northern Gannet is a constant presence at any time of year, and a full complement of alcids — Atlantic Puffin, Guillemot, Razorbill — is expected in summer.

The Mermaid Pleasure Trips service offers a commercially accessible mainland entry point to the Cornwall pelagic scene, bookable by phone rather than online (07901731201 or 01736 363191), typically departing Penzance Harbour in the early morning and returning after five to six hours at sea. The trip attracts both dedicated seabird birders and general wildlife enthusiasts: cetaceans, Blue Sharks and Basking Sharks are regular encounters alongside the seabird targets. Bookings and scheduling enquiries should be made by phone; check cornwallboattrips.co.uk for current seasonal availability and trip details.
