About This Trip

The Petrel Station operates full-day (9–10 hour) pelagic trips from Tutukaka Harbour, heading 40 km offshore to the continental shelf edge off Northland — one of the world's most seabird-rich oceanic zones. Trips pass through three distinct habitat zones: inshore waters, the Poor Knights Islands breeding colony area, and the deep shelf edge where chumming concentrates birds. With nearly 70 species recorded, specialties include the rare New Zealand Storm-Petrel, Pycroft's Petrel, Black-winged Petrel, Buller's Shearwater, and multiple albatross species including Northern Royal and Antipodean. This is widely regarded as the premier dedicated pelagic seabird research and birding operation in the North Island.
