About This Trip
Jamie's Whaling Station & Adventure Centres runs a dedicated offshore Pelagic Wildlife Tour from their Tofino dock, pushing up to 25 nautical miles (46 km) out to the productive waters approaching the continental shelf edge. Passengers travel aboard 12-person open Zodiacs, with flotation suits, gloves, and toques provided for the full-exposure offshore run — conditions can be demanding and the experience is best suited to those comfortable in open-ocean environments. The tour targets the full suite of North Pacific pelagic seabirds: Black-footed Albatross (occasionally Short-tailed Albatross), Pink-footed, Sooty, and Flesh-footed Shearwaters, Fork-tailed and Leach's Storm-Petrels, Pomarine and Parasitic Jaegers, and Sabine's Gull. The offshore waters also host good concentrations of marine mammals, including Humpback and Fin Whales, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, Dall's and Harbour Porpoises, and Northern Fur Seals. Because the tour requires specific sea and weather conditions to safely reach the outer shelf, a one-day buffer on either side of the booking date is strongly recommended. Jamie's Whaling Station has operated out of Tofino for more than 40 years and is one of the most experienced marine wildlife operators on Vancouver Island's outer coast.
