About This Trip

The Petrel Station runs dedicated offshore pelagic seabird tours from Tutukaka Marina in Northland, New Zealand — one of the world's most diverse seabird watching locations. Departing from Tutukaka (approximately 30 minutes from Whangarei and 2.5 hours north of Auckland), the tours pass through the Poor Knights Islands, a major seabird breeding area, before continuing approximately 40 km offshore to the continental shelf edge where deep water upwellings concentrate an extraordinary variety of tubenose species.

With 70 seabird species recorded to date — including an astonishing 52 tubenose species — the waters off Tutukaka rank among the world's most prolific pelagic seabird zones. Chumming is used throughout the offshore drift, attracting birds close to the vessel for extended viewing and photography. Tours spend 9–10 hours on the ocean, providing ample time to observe multiple species in depth.

The signature target is the New Zealand Storm-Petrel (Fregetta maoriana), one of the most celebrated conservation rediscoveries in recent ornithology: presumed extinct for 150 years and based only on three 19th-century museum specimens, the species was rediscovered alive in 2003 from Hauraki Gulf pelagic trips. The Tutukaka zone is one of the few reliable locations to see this IUCN Endangered endemic. Other primary targets include Pycroft's Petrel (New Zealand endemic, breeds on offshore islands near Tutukaka), Cook's Petrel (breeds on Little Barrier Island and Codfish Island), Black Petrel (Procellaria parkinsoni; Vulnerable, breeds only on Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf), Black-winged Petrel, Mottled Petrel, and Grey-faced Petrel. Albatross diversity is outstanding: Northern Royal Albatross, Antipodean Albatross (Gibson's Wandering), White-capped Albatross, Salvin's Albatross, Black-browed Albatross, and Buller's Albatross are all regular. Shearwaters include Buller's Shearwater (globally near-endemic to NZ offshore waters), Flesh-footed Shearwater, Little Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Short-tailed Shearwater, and Fluttering Shearwater, alongside Fairy Prion, White-faced Storm-Petrel, Wilson's Storm-Petrel, Northern Giant Petrel, Brown Skua, and Arctic Skua.

The operator maintains a long-term at-sea seabird research project tracking species diversity and population trends offshore from Tutukaka — one of New Zealand's most valuable citizen-science pelagic datasets. Peak season runs September–December, when multiple consecutive 'Double Header' and 'Triple Header' tours are scheduled on successive mornings.
