About This Trip
The 25-hour Ogasawara-maru ferry voyage from Tokyo to Chichijima crosses more than 1,000 km of open Pacific Ocean, passing through some of the most productive pelagic waters in the North Pacific. The crossing regularly produces Short-tailed, Black-footed, and Laysan Albatrosses, Bonin and Streaked Petrels, Tristram's and Matsudaira's Storm-petrels, Wedge-tailed and Bannerman's Shearwaters, Brown Boobies, and skuas. The Ogasawara Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to two endemic landbirds, the Bonin White-eye and Bonin Grosbeak, making the ferry crossing a world-class pelagic birding event.
