La Paz Pelagic

The La Paz Pelagic is a dedicated offshore seabird trip run by Birding Los Cabos from La Paz — the state capital of Baja California Sur, situated on the coast of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) approximately 170 km north of Cabo San Lucas. La Paz is the primary gateway port for the central Gulf of California, where the enclosed sea deepens rapidly north of the Cerralvo Channel and La Ventana Bay. The Gulf of California is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its extraordinary marine biodiversity; its pelagic zone supports Mexico's highest concentrations of Craveri's Murrelet, Blue-footed Booby, and the endemic Yellow-footed Gull, alongside migratory storm-petrels and shearwaters moving through the Gulf during the summer and autumn months.

The La Paz Pelagic targets the same core species assemblage as the operator's Los Cabos product but accesses different Gulf waters from a northern departure point: Black Storm-Petrel (the abundant, all-dark Oceanodroma that breeds around the central Gulf and post-breeds in these waters), Least Storm-Petrel (tiny wedge-tailed storm-petrel of the eastern Pacific), Black-vented Shearwater (a nearshore-hugging endemic of the California Current), Pink-footed Shearwater (large pale-bellied Pacific shearwater, common in autumn), Craveri's Murrelet (the Gulf's signature alcid, Near Threatened and essentially restricted to these waters), Brown Booby, Blue-footed Booby, Magnificent Frigatebird, and Red-billed Tropicbird. The calm, sheltered upper Gulf often allows extended observation time at the boat, and the enclosed sea conditions mean this trip is somewhat more accessible to participants sensitive to ocean motion than open-Pacific alternatives.

A brunch stop at a local La Paz restaurant is included in the tour price, making the full morning a combined offshore pelagic and cultural experience.
