Los Cabos Pelagic

The Los Cabos Pelagic is a dedicated offshore seabird trip run by Birding Los Cabos, departing in the early morning from Los Cabos Marina at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The vessel heads approximately 7 nautical miles offshore to the Gordo Banks — a pair of underwater seamounts and canyon systems where the continental shelf drops away rapidly into deep Pacific and Gulf of California water. This is a distinct product from the operator's shorter "Estuary Endemic and mini-pelagic" offering: the Los Cabos Pelagic is a committed offshore birding half-day with experienced ornithologist guides, and an optional fishing add-on is explicitly recommended by the operator as a means of bringing pelagic birds closer to the vessel — functioning as an attractant analogous to chumming. The vessel targets open blue water at and beyond the shelf break.

Los Cabos sits at the confluence of two ocean systems: the cool, upwelling-influenced eastern Pacific on the outside of the cape, and the warmer, enclosed Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) on the inside. This convergence zone creates some of the most productive offshore bird habitat in Mexico. The Gordo Banks area, a known hotspot for sportfishing and scuba diving on account of its pelagic megafauna (hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, Pacific sailfish), also concentrates pelagic seabirds drawn by the same prey aggregations above the canyon edge.

Craveri's Murrelet is the headline target — a small, charcoal-backed alcid that breeds on rocky Gulf islands (principally Isla San Pedro Mártir and Isla San Pedro Nolasco) and disperses into offshore Pacific and Gulf waters after the breeding season. It is essentially endemic to the Sea of Cortez and is Near Threatened; serious alcid listers regard a look at a Craveri's Murrelet at close range as one of the prizes of Mexican offshore birding. Black Storm-Petrel is the most abundant storm-petrel in the region in season — a large, entirely blackish Oceanodroma with languid, buoyant flight — with Least Storm-Petrel (the smallest North American storm-petrel, barely bigger than a sparrow, with a wedge-shaped tail) and Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrel also regularly occurring. Pink-footed Shearwater, a large, hulking Pacific shearwater with a pink-based bill, and Black-vented Shearwater, a coastal-edge endemic of the California Current system, are the principal shearwaters. Brown Booby, Blue-footed Booby, Masked Booby, and Nazca Booby provide the colour; Red-billed Tropicbird is a possibility in warmer seasons. Magnificent Frigatebird is a constant presence overhead. Heermann's Gull — the handsome grey-bodied, red-billed gull that breeds on Isla Raza in the central Gulf — is common inshore and at shelf-edge.

Birding Los Cabos was founded in 1999 and has operated continuously since, making it one of the longest-established specialist birding guide services in Mexico. Guides Joanne, Maria Elena Muriel, and Ivan Moreno are fluent English speakers with extensive experience of the regional avifauna. The operator maintains a booking calendar on request; trips run when the minimum of two participants is reached.
